With a mosaic class
This is a hands on course. Beginners will be taught how to use tools, about the different materials that can be incorporated into mosaics and gradually taught different methods and project approaches.
Each student will be coached according to their current level to ensure that their mosaic skills advance.
Those with prior mosaic experience are welcome to work on a projects of their choice. For students with some mosaic experience, we’ll look in more depth at Colour Theory, Light and Shade, Line and Form, Perspective and Composition. Also ‘Andamento’ – flow or movement and tile spacing which effect mosaic. ‘Opus’ – tile laying techniques will be explored and experimented with.

- An overview of mosaic materials
- An overview of techniques including direct and in-direct mosaic methods and design flow
- Tile cutting and planning a mosaic design
- Final polishing and finishing techniques
- Adhesives and grout
WHAT’S INCLUDED
Some materials are available. Advice will be given at the course start on materials that can also be bought or recycled and brought in. A Selection of mosaic materials including glass and ceramic tiles, millefouri and smalti will also be available for purchase during the course. We also hold in stock some items such as mirror bases, and 3D sculptural bases which can be bought. Further guidance and support on projects and items/materials that you can bring from home or buy new or second hand will be given at the course start.
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring a scrapbook of inspirational images, colours, wallpaper samples, fabrics etc. so that we can help you to plan a mosaic in your own style and design.
Please also bring a packed lunch each day.
WHAT TO WEAR: It is recommended that you bring a pair of shoes with covered in toes, a long sleeved sweater and sturdy leg wear (such as jeans) for working in the studio, as pieces of glass/ceramic can sometimes fly off with some force when being cut and shaped.
